Bank Strike Deferred After Late-Night Talks Between IBA and UFBU

New Delhi, September 28, 2026: The proposed nationwide bank strike has been postponed following late-night discussions between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).

The development comes after representatives of the banking industry and employee unions held talks over several long-pending demands. Following the discussions, the unions decided not to proceed with the strike as originally planned.

Bank Strike Put on Hold

Bank employees had planned industrial action over a number of issues concerning working conditions, employee benefits and the demand for a five-day banking week.

After negotiations between IBA and UFBU, both sides reportedly reached an understanding that allowed the proposed strike to be deferred.

The decision is expected to prevent major disruption to banking services and provide relief to customers who were concerned about possible branch closures and delays in routine transactions.

Five-Day Banking Week Remains a Key Demand

One of the major issues raised by bank unions is the implementation of a five-day working week for banks.

Currently, banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Unions have been seeking holidays on the remaining Saturdays as well.

The matter is expected to remain part of further discussions between the banking industry, employee representatives and concerned authorities.

Other Employee Issues Also Discussed

Apart from the five-day banking week, the talks reportedly covered several other matters related to bank employees and officers.

These include pending service-related issues, employee benefits and other demands that have been under discussion between the unions and the banking industry.

Both sides are expected to continue negotiations to find mutually acceptable solutions.

Banking Services Expected to Continue Normally

With the strike now deferred, customers are expected to be able to access normal banking services.

Branch banking, cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque-related services and other regular operations are expected to continue according to normal schedules, subject to local holidays and individual bank arrangements.

Online banking services such as UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs are also expected to function normally.

Further Talks Expected

The postponement of the strike does not necessarily mean that all issues raised by bank employees have been fully resolved.

Further discussions are expected between IBA and UFBU regarding the pending demands.

For customers, however, the immediate concern over disruption to banking operations has eased following the decision to defer the strike.
